“My grandpa always told me to work hard and finish strong. My dad always says, ‘do the best you can and everything else will take care of itself,’ so I strive to be like them.”

CLASS OF 2019
Saint Joseph High School
South Bend, Indiana
Lexi Kilcoin is as aggressive in her schoolwork as she is on the golf course. Several role models forged her commitment to academics.
Kilcoin learned early on from her family the importance of excelling in the classroom. Brianna Stines, a former teacher at Saint Joseph High School who now teaches at John Young Middle School in Mishawaka, also pushes Kilcoin to take her studies seriously.
“They have all inspired me,” Kilcoin said. “You can tell by how they present themselves that they work hard and they’re all successful people. My grandpa always told me to work hard and finish strong. My dad always says, ‘do the best you can and everything else will take care of itself,’ so I strive to be like them,” Kilcoin continued. “Many people are responsible for the person I am today. I am very blessed.”
It’s that do your best mentality passed on from those close to her that has helped Kilcoin develop persistence and determination.
“I believe in a hard work ethic and the only way you’re going to be successful is if you are committed to always doing your best,” she said. “I focus on my academics so I can hopefully have opportunities in life like attending the college of my choice. I also believe that establishing a good work ethic now will better prepare me for what life offers beyond high school and college.”
Kilcoin hasn’t yet settled on a career path, but wherever her heart and passions lead she is certain she’d like to work with children. Whether that means going into the medical field or another industry could become clearer in the near future.
“Right now I’m considering being a pediatrician or going into the field of journalism,” she said. “I am undecided right now, but I plan to shadow several people in the medical field in order to gain a better understanding if that is the direction that fits me best.” Kilcoin recognizes that she has many options and interests and concluded by saying, “Most importantly, I love working with kids and know that helping kids will be a factor in my decision, no matter what path I take.”
